A QUOTE

"What makes friendship so fragile is also exactly what makes it so special. You have to continually opt in. That you choose it is what gives it its value."
— Jennifer Senior, American journalist and author

A QUESTION

Who do you care about that you haven't reached out to lately?

A THOUGHT

Friendship is like breathing: it brings life to everything, even if you don't stop to think about it.

The value of good friendship lies in the grace of its existence. We endeavor to experience life’s joys and sorrows surrounded by people who have a vested interest in our emotional state.

One could argue that this new way of living - of moving away, working at home, and limiting social engagement - conspires against friendship, even though it calls for the bonds of friendship all the more.

I have a bad habit of delaying sharing things with the people I love most: Hey, this week's hectic - you know I care about you, will send longer message soon. As time passes, catch-ups compound and the weight of our morphing glob of updates gets heavier.

The truth is, our bonds need regular maintenance. They're rejuvenated by the ordinary patterns of book club, wine night, long walks, FaceTimes. It's this backdrop of an endless shared conversation that gives our friendships meaning when we turn to one another for support and celebration.

Friendship is like breathing: if you focus your attention on it you can tap into its power.
